Road Safety Scotland

Community Safety

Research published in 2000 showed that there is a link between the neighbourhood one lives in and the rate of road accident casualties. People of all age groups experiencing social exclusion generally suffer higher casualty rates. Road Safety Scotland is keen to support the development of more community-based measures and initiatives aimed at reducing casualty rates in such communities.

Research conducted on behalf of the Scottish Executive in 2001 involved a survey of road safety initiatives being carried out within Social Inclusion Partnership areas across Scotland. The survey found that within the 34 partnership areas there is a wide range of initiatives being developed to promote road safety. Following on from the survey a number of more in-depth case studies were conducted with the intention of producing a Good Practice Guide. This Guide 'A Safe Place to Live - Developing Community Based Initiatives to Promote Road Safety' provides information and advice on ways local communities in partnership with a wide range of agencies - concerned with road safety, community safety or education and regeneration can work to make their neighbourhoods a safer place to live.

A SAFE PLACE TO LIVE

This guide followed on from a survey of road safety initiatives being carried out with Social Inclusion Partnerships across Scotland. The survey indicated that within these thirty four partnership areas, there has been a wide range of initiatives being developed to promote road safety.

The guide brings together ideas and examples of good practice from across a wide range of projects throughout Scotland. These demonstrate a number of innovative ways of improving road safety – especially in neighbourhoods where there are most dangers, or among groups most at risk.
