Road Safety Scotland

The Role of Information Technology in Road Safety Education

The project was commissioned to evaluate the current and potential use of IT in Scottish schools, particularly in the context of RSE. It explored what type of IT resource was used for RSE in schools, identified the strengths and weaknesses of IT as a medium for road safety education and evaluated the potential of IT in the teaching of road safety.

Start Date: 01/10/1998
End Date: 01/11/1999

Findings

The research found that a variety of IT resources was available for use by schools in the teaching of RSE, but that actual use of these resources was patchy. Only 13% of Primary and 7% of Secondary schools said that they had used an IT resource in the teaching of road safety. The research made a number of recommendations regarding the development of IT resources in road safety education and the potential of the SRSC website. The findings have been utilised in the development of this website and will be later applied in the context of developing a strategy for RSE.
