Road Safety Scotland

Streetsense Resources

This is a picture of the Streetsense resource

Streetsense is a Road Safety Education resource for all primary schools in Scotland. The resource is an important part of the national strategy for road safety education in Scotland. The aim of the strategy is to ensure that all children and young people in Scotland receive a minimum amount of road safety education at school - covering specific topics at certain times.

Streetsense covers Levels A to E and aligns to the Health Education 5-14 National Guidelines, to be taught in Personal and Social Development. Other curricular links, for example Information and Communications Technology 5-14 National Guidelines, are highlighted. Streetsense also links to Citizenship and to the concept of a Health Promoting School.

Streetsense includes:

  • Separate booklets for Level A, B, C, D and E, which each contain curricular links, summary of activities, teachers' notes, suggested lesson plans, pupil worksheets, suggested answer sheets, parent/guardian information and task sheets, written assessments with answers, activity record sheets, glossary, word flashcards and an appendix.
  • Gym Cards (Level A)
  • Audio CD
  • Photographs
  • Posters
  • Leaflets

Streetsense2

Following research which identified recommendations for the next phase of this resource Streetsense2 was developed. This was not a rewrite, but a core version of the original which has been provided for every classroom in Scotland. Streetsense2 does not replace the original, but enhances it by providing teachers with a reach-down copy of the essential material which can then be followed up by extension work from the original Streetsense resource.

Streetsense2 has been brought into line with the Curriculum for Excellence and provides teachers with cross-curricular links and forward-planning sheets.

The illustrations are now age related and these have been adopted in the support website streetsense2.com

Streetsense2.com allows the pupils to explore the resource more interactively. It is lean-forward in style and provides all the key road safety messages in the resource, with answers and feedback. It can also be used with an interactive white board as a whole class activity. It is visual and auditory and contains one of the DfT Think campaign adverts.

This is an exciting addition to the whole resource and underpins all the important messages in a game-style which appeals to young people and engages them with the subject.

All Together for Streetsense

This assembly resource can be used in conjunction with ‘Streetsense’ to build on the topics covered. The material links to other Road Safety Scotland resources such as the Scottish Cycle Training Scheme and the Junior Road Safety Officer scheme. The resource can also be used if you get the opportunity to host the play 'Urban Roadeo', for older road users.

Research was carried out with schools in a number of local authorities in Scotland and it found that:

  • Most schools have assemblies on the theme of road safety

  • Most of these assemblies are either head teacher or class led

  • Schools wanted a resource to support road safety themes

Streetsense – Gaelic Worksheets

The pupil worksheets from Road Safety Scotland’s original ‘Streetsense’ resource for primary schools were initially translated into Gaelic by Rosemary Ward, who worked with Argyll and Bute Council at the time. The worksheets were then proofed by Stòrlann Nàiseanta na Gàidhlig in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis.

Road Safety Scotland is grateful to both Rosemary and those involved at Storlann for all their support in producing the Gaelic versions of the pupil worksheets.

The Level B, C and D worksheets will shortly be available for download.
